DC Increases Fines for Historic District Home Destruction

Too many historic district property owners carry out substantial alteration, demolition, or new construction in violation of their permits or even without a permit.  A property owner who fails to obtain or stay within the scope and conditions of a building permit now faces fines increased from $4,187 to a maximum of $10,000 or up to $25,000 for willful violations.  You can make changes to your house, but only within the guidelines and definitely only pursuant to a permit.  Contact the DC Historic Preservation Office for more information.
